I Saar what you did there

Historical context
Second World War

First of all, I would like to apologise for the horrible pun.

The Saar Protectorate was a short arrangement of direct control to France from Germany (in contrast to the area of West Germany France occupied) after the Second World War.

The amusement it springs forth is why France was still interested in annexing land from Germany. The annexation of Alsace-Lorraine after the First World War made sense, since that province was heavily populated by French people, but Saar, which had previously been under French control under Napoleon as Sarre, was largely dominated by Germans.

In addition — I would argue — wasn't it also a bit out of style to demand land of this sort for France?
